Home Maintenance

Your water heater is an expensive and much used piece of equipment in your home. Today we thought a little guide to your water heater would be helpful.

One of the best ways to extend the life of your water heater is to drain the tank. Some people say drain it once a year fully while others say drain it a quarter of a tank every 3 months. Either way you are you are trying to remove the sediment in the bottom of the tank. This will help extend the life of your water heater.

Common Problems

Its always a bummer when you go to take a hot shower and the water never heats up. The most common reason for this is the pilot light is out. Before you re-light the pilot though make sure to read the instructions on the tank as you are dealing with gas and fire.

If you can never get your water hot enough (and you don't have someone taking a 30 minute shower right ahead of you) you might be able to turn up the temperature on the water heater itself. Make sure though that you only turn it up a little bit each day and try it a couple of hours later.

Sometimes you might hear banging and popping noises coming from your water heater. From time to time this might happen but if it is regularly making these noises and you have drained the tank it might be time to call a plumber.

If you are considering purchasing a new water heater make sure you find one that is energy efficient and have also looked at your other options for tankless water heaters and solar heaters.
