Economists Expect Strong Year for Orange County
Local economists have stated that job growth in the construction industry in Orange county is fueled by an increase in residential and multifamily permits. Last week, Chapman University released its annual Orange County Economic Forecast and the outlook is very strong for the county and the commercial real estate industry in the coming year.

Construction job growth increased 5.7% in 2016 before falling to 4.8% in 2017. The Chapman economists said the decline in construction job growth last year was due to a drop in the number of residential permits.

Economists expect job growth in the coming year in the construction industry to bounce back to 5.3% as residential and multifamily permit activity increases almost 11% to nearly 12,000 units in the

Job Growth
Local shopping centers are busy. Freeway traffic is heavy. Homes sell briskly despite high prices. And landlords continue to raise rents.

So how could Orange County job growth be so anemic, according to employment statistics released monthly by the state?

Crab Cooker
The 1930s cherry-red building housing Newport Beach institution The Crab Cooker is slated for demolition, which could leave the restaurant temporarily closed for at least a year.

The seafood restaurant, a fixture in the Newport Peninsula for more than 67 years, suffered slab and foundation damage during the construction of The Vue. The luxury development on Newport Boulevard features 27 bayfront townhomes starting at $2.35 million.

During construction of The Vue “the whole building kinda sunk on one end,” Crab Cooker owner Jim Wasko said.

The restaurant has been deemed safe to occupy by structural engineers. It’s been operating for months with the damage, while Wasko and the city figure out how to best repair the building.

Triangle Square

The Triangle, a shopping center at the intersection of Newport Boulevard, Harbor Boulevard and 19th in Costa Mesa — was sold to an undisclosed buyer for $55.7 million. That's no chump change. The terms of the deal were announced last week in a news release from CBRE, which brokered the purchase along with National Retail Partners — West.

That press release identified the buyer only as “a Los Angeles-based family office syndicate.”

A representative from Irvine-based Greenlaw Partners, which has owned the complex since 2006, confirmed the sale in an email but did not offer any details as to the motivation behind it or the identity of the buyer.
